What I’ve Been Reading March 1

Chinese have a national standard for public toilets of a 1:1 ratio of toilets for men and women. In other words, for each urinal or toilet that a men’s bathroom has, the women’s bathroom must have a toilet. The result is a huge line for the women’s bathroom and no line for the men. Why the heck do they have a national standard? Shouldn’t this be one of those things determined on situation and location? Maybe they should consider unisex bathrooms.

I almost feel bad for the guy in the first clip on this Skepchick post as they mock and take him down, but I don’t. The only reason I feel bad for him is that someone apparently scammed him into thinking those watches weren’t a scam.

Why It’s So Important To Keep Moving” – that’s right, keep moving!

On Snowe:

“While her motivation and sense of responsibility remain, she continued, “I do find it frustrating, however, that an atmosphere of polarization and ‘my way or the highway’ ideologies has become pervasive in campaigns and in our governing institutions.”

I would really like to know what studies the person in this article is talking about:

“There is a widespread misconception that if you talk to your child about guns they will know enough about how to act around a gun. The problem is, they are still children and studies show, over and over, they will not act as an adult will around a gun,” says Laura Cutilletta, a senior staff attorney with Legal Community Against Violence, a public interest law center dedicated to preventing gun violence, located in San Francisco.

Might I add that a 17-year-old isn’t exactly a child. They are in some ways, but not others, and I think from my own experiences that a 17-year-old would act more like an adult than a younger child around a gun. Personally, I was taught that a gun is a tool that requires a lot of caution, and I always acted very cautiously around guns, even as a child. Anyway, the shooting, as all shootings are, was tragic.

A new kind of digital camera is pretty awesome – you can refocus the entire picture even after the photo is taken!
